🎉 Final demonstration of the KoliBRI project

KoliBRI – Collision avoidance in inland shipping based on radar and the integration of additional sensors – was a joint research project in which we, Argonics GmbH, worked together with our partners Argonav GmbH and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Digital Process Engineering Group, Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics, on a novel assistance system for inland shipping that enables navigation at automation level 3 – Conditional Automation. The aim was to raise safety on waterways to a new level through intelligent collision avoidance systems. The system was tested with the support of the motor cargo vessel “Niedersachsen 22”, which was provided to us by our associated partner, HGK Shipping GmbH.

At yesterday’s final event in Duisburg, the methods applied and the results of the project were presented by the project partners and subsequently discussed in an engaging round of talks. The invited international guests represented various sectors of inland shipping; representatives from institutions as well as from research and industry were in attendance.

💡 Results

  • Environment detection: By using multiple systems such as AIS, RADAR, LiDAR and the optical system “Sentry”, relevant objects were detected. The fused information forms the basis for predicting movement and, if necessary, initiating evasive maneuvers.
  • PredictionMethods were developed for predicting movement that are specifically tailored to the situation of inland vessels navigating along defined routes. A key aspect is the use of a large amount of data from previously navigated tracks.
  • Evasive maneuver: The developed evasive algorithms proved to be well suited in the test scenarios to handle the required situations. Further practical trials are necessary.

In the accompanying brochure, we have compiled all results as well as the research work of the individual partners. You will find it available for download further below.

Finally, we would like to thank the guests for their numerous attendance and the valuable exchange. Special thanks go to HGK Shipping GmbH for providing us with their premises for yesterday’s event.
